The Food Assistance Division administers the Food Assistance Program in Alabama. At the national level, this program was orginally called the Food Stamp Program, but changed its name on October 1, 2008 to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)  Its purpose is to end hunger and improve nutrition by providing monthly benefits to eligible low-income households to help them buy the food they need to maintain a healthy diet.
Eligibility rules and benefit amounts, based on income and household size, are determined by regulations issued by the United States Department of Agriculture USDA), Food and Nutrition Service.  100% of the benefits issued through this program are federally funded.
Applications for the Food Assistance Program are available in all county DHR offices and on the DHR website.
